GAM3

Young people aged 15 to 21, from all over Denmark, were gathered the last weekend of January at GAM3's indoor facility for urban sports StreetMekka. Here they were educated through GAM3’s PlayMaker programme, where the theme and buzzword this time around was leadership.

Basketball alongside street soccer, street fit and street dance were on the menu. These are the activities that the youngsters themselves, are in the process of learning to coach in. The purpose with the PlayMaker education is to equip the young people with the right tools to coordinate street sport activities in there own regions throughout the country.

The theme for this camp was leadership. How to be a good leader, discussing what the tearm "leadership" actually means?

This theme was discussed in smaller dialogue groups, where a mentor in each group helped leading the discussion. The philosophy behind the PlayMaker education is “learning by doing”. In other words the young people have to take responsibility for their own education, and among other things, try to lead and teach there fellow teammates in their respectable sport, with guidance from professional coaches.

Throughout the weekend the PlayMakers received presentations about leadership, from different inspiring people that the playmakers could relate to. For example the lecture from Hamid, who after having been involved with crime and in his teens having trouble with the police, decided to turn his life around, and is now the head of a company who helps young immigrants and troubled youths. The managing director of GAM3, Simon Prahm, also did a presentation on how to communicate and how to be a good leader.

In the end of March the PlayMakers are teaming up one last time, for their third and last PlayMaker camp, followed up by one month of internship in their sports, where they can put what they have learned in to practice.
